Sky Paint

The blue is most important
because it frames all else,
so I put it on first. A thin
wash that swallows the
dimples in the paper sky.

Letting it go dry in the wind
must not be done so quickly
or puddles of the pigment
will mud up and stop the
orioles when they fly.

Then it’s okay to put down
the brush for awhile,
clasp my hands together
as all kindergartners
will explain, and just exult
in what I have done
for myself this day.
