Knocking

In the night a strong alarming wind
knocked pine nuts from the tree
under which I slept–the reverie
I enjoyed would suddenly go bad

as the tiny hardened balls of wood
bounced with no sure pattern of sound.
Half asleep and adrift in this sea of air,
the falling pieces jolting me in light despair.
