Fallen Star

Yesterday at low tide on the beach
I saw stars fallen from the sky and lying
under a thin sheen of salt water and sand.

Tiny markings etched into their bodies,
identifying the quadrants of the universe
from which they have come visiting.

A floral weave of five extensions,
men of arms and legs and head,
with gray navels in their centers.

Had I been floating on the ocean
when they collided with this world,
I’d tell where the tides would take them.
